Prime Minister Romano ProdiItaly has had many leaders. The current Prime Minister, Romano Prodi is here to the left. Not only is he the prime Minister of Italy he was also the president of the European Commission from 1999 to 2004. Between 1996 and 1998 he was also the leader of the "olive Tree" coalition.

The Italian Flag
The flag of Italy (right and background of page) was first established during the Napoleonic Wars in northen Italy by the French. The French chose the colors from their uniforms and designed it after their own flag. At first they had the colors going horizontally, but was later changed on January 7th, 1797.

Map of ItalyTo the left is a map of Italy. Italy is found in Southern Europe. It is a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. To give an idea of how big Italy actually is it is a little bigger then Arizona. Italy is veryy mountainous and has veryy little plains. Italy has a very large coastline, but still has many bordering countries that influence their culture. The influencing countries are Austria, France, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Many People live in Italy. In fact Italy's population is 58,103,033. Most of the population is made up of males and the death rate is very low conpared to the birth rate.

The Italian National Anthem was written by Goffredo Mameli and Michele Novaro. Here is part of the Anthem. "Italian brothers, Italy has arisen, with Scipio's helmet binding her head. Where is Victory? Let her bow down, for God has made her The slave of Rome. Let us gather in legions, ready to die! Italy has called!" This was written after they fought their first war of independence in Lombardy in 1848.

Roman ColosseumItaly has many sites to see such as the Roman Colosseum in Rome which is to the right. Almost every event is Ancient Rome was held here. Inside they showed fights, hunting and even sea battles. The colosseum is covered in travertime stone slabs and decorated with arches and huge statues.
